Working with children of Pre-school age requires specialist training and our staff are particularly highly qualified.  The staff to child ratio is 1:6 or higher.  All staff hold current First Aid certificates, undergo Basic Food Hygiene training, Health and Safety training and comply with Kirklees Council’s Safeguarding Children Board.  All staff, volunteers and committee members are CRB checked.

Our team is headed by Lead Practitioner Jeanette Marshall.  She began working at Kirkroyds Pre-school in 1994 and has been Lead Practitioner since September 1999.  Jeanette has a Degree in Early Years and is currently studying for her BA.  Jeanette is also Pre-school’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO).

The Deputy Lead Practitioner is Sally Emmett who began working at Pre-school in 2002.  Prior to this Sally was a registered childminder for five years and also worked as a Quality Assurance Assessor for the National Childminding Association.  Sally is qualified to NVQ Level 3 in Early Years Care and Education and is Pre-school’s Safeguarding Officer.  Sally also has a Geography Degree and has worked in insurance and marketing.

Penny Smith is our Early Years Professional.  Penny has worked at Kirkroyds Pre-school since 2003.  Penny started as a member of the Committee and then joined as a member of staff.  She undertook her NVQ level 2 and 3 in Child Care and Education, and now has an Early Years Degree.  Penny also has a Law Degree, although she has decided that she much prefers working with children!

Nicola Pawsey has been part of the team at Kirkroyd’s Pre-school since 1997.  Prior to this she worked as a Nursery Nurse in a school nursery unit and as a Nanny.  She is also a Registered Childminder which she still combines with working at pre-school.  Nicola is NNEB qualified.

Diane Taylor has been working at Pre-school since 2000.  Diane worked in a Chemist for a number of years gaining qualifications along the way.  After spending time at home with her daughter she decided she wanted to work with children and joined the Pre-school team as relief staff and subsequently became permanent.  Diane is also qualified to NVQ Level 3 in Early Years and Childcare. 

These members of staff make up the five Key Persons all qualified to at least Level 3 or above in Early Years Practice.  The Key staff are supported by regular support staff to ensure consistency of care for the children attending the setting.

Staff training is reviewed annually and staff make full use of relevant appropriate training programs to update their knowledge and skills.
